Megan's Law Identifies Location of Sex Offenders in Community

If you are moving into a new neighborhood or just want to know if there is a registered sex offender in your current community, www.meganslaw.ca.gov can help identify the exact that address that an offender has registered as his/her home.  Megan’s law was established when 7-year-old Megan Kanka was raped and killed by a known child molester in 1994.  He had moved across the street from her family, but her parents were unaware of his history. After the tragedy, Megan’s family worked to have local communities informed about sex offenders in their area.  California was the first state to enact a sex offender registration law.  Now all states have a form of Megan’s law.

In addition to information on specific sex offenders in the community, the Department of Justice’s Megan’s law website has information about how to stay safe, facts about sex offenders, which types of sex offenders are exempt from registering, frequently asked questions, and more.

If you witness a known sex offender near a place frequented  by easy targets, the best action is to call 911.  Reports can also be filed online at the Megan’s law website.
